An Independant Village Pub
Graffiti from 1649 and some even earlier. The pub still maintains many original features such as fireplaces, old oak beams and beautiful piece of linen fold panelling in the Lounge Bar Area
As you would expect from a building of this age, we have at least one resident ghost, a parson who went by the name of Copeland. He is said to haunt the front passageway and the cellar and has been seen by many people over the years. He seems to be a friendly chap though so need to worry.
The George Inn is still the heart of the village and has a wonderful warm atmosphere to go with its bustling trade - especially over the weekends.Several of the locals have been drinking in the George for over 40 years and they can be usually found in 'Compost Corner' where they are happy to expand on the changes that have taken place both in the village and the pub over the years.
In Compost Corner, you will also find the works of our late, resident poet Mr Arthur Lord. Arthur's poems chronicle the events in the pub an village over the last 20 years and they offer a rare insight into village life.
If you feel that you would like to Chardstock for a little longer or simply cant make that drive home, there are 4 well appointed cottage style bedrooms situated within the rear of the courtyard of the pub.
All our menu items are prepared with the finest fresh ingredients from local suppliers and our dishes range from traditional home cooking to favourite light snacks.
Please relax and enjoy your time spent with us at The George Inn and we hope that you will return time and time again.
